Information Literacy Overview

source from:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k-GQtGDEp38

This video provides some great ideas for helping us improve our information literacy skills. It also introduces how to get good resources from google search.

Permission from Websites

A couple days ago, I downloaded a music from internet. That music is from an offical music website, but After the process of downloading, I found out some viruses attached, then I had to re-install my systerm all over again. I lost a lot of useful documents. In that website, there is a permission expressing clearly that there is no any viruses with music. But result is opposite.
That makes me do not trust permission from any website any longer. I think there is a way which may avoid some trouble. Before you want to use service from some website, you had better find out some commets or references about that website.

Literacy Skills

Literacy is essential to people’ lifelong learning. It influences how we communicate and act how we pass on our cultural knowledge to our family, community, and next generation. Nowadays technology developed rapidly. You may reach all kinds of sources through internet. How can we get the essence, and throw away the garbage or poisons?

Gradually, literacy skills become more and more important. Here is the story of Family Literacy. In the story Sharon Darling told us, if men are hungry, don’t give them fish. Try to teach them fish. http://video.google.com/videosearch?q=literacy#q=literacy&qvid=literacy&vid=5311443039292466042

Pictures from Internet

About 20 years ago, pictures are regarded as a very important evidence used in court. However, the reality of pictures become an issue nowadays, because of technology development of computer. Especially, some pictures we get on-line, which are related to plitical, sciential, naked subjects and so forth. For example, I believe some people must have heard about certain femal stars` nude pictures which have been found. From regular people`s view, just focus on pictures themselves, I believe that the conclusion is those pictures are real, but some of them which are proved by specialists are edited throgh computer techonology. Therefore, when we get some pictures and those pictures will be used in somewhere, I must judge the pictures are real or not at the beginning.

Trust nothing you read !!!

  1. Everyone knows that the Internet is a world with huge amount of information. In present time anyone can make a Web page, and anyone can share his/her information with others.
How can we determine the quality of information when we need to do research, or when we need information for other purposes? How can we tell if the information is reliable or not?
The only answer to this question is to use information from reliable and true sources such as libraries ( http://www.libraryinstruction.com/infolit.html ).

A deceit for Google Cash

Google adsense is well-known in world right now. But google cash of which I believe most of people have not heard yet. I am one of those people. That situaton did not last until I found an article from google search when I was looking for some information on-line.Because the title for that article invovles `google`, I spend some time to read the whole paregragh. General speaking for google cash I get from that text, you only need to spend 2 0r 3 hours every day and a small amount of money on doing several easy jobs on-line, and then you will see a big income flowing in your account right away. It is almost like a pie in the sky. Normally I will not believe it, but it is called google cash. That makes me do some research to judge whether it is true or not and the best way I can use to find out is from offical website of google. The result is that there is not any concept about google cash in google website at all. Also, there are a lot of articles which are all about google cash is a scam. Therefor, some information appeare on-line could be fake, you should not always accept them all without thinking.

A tip: How to trust the internet information?

There is a tip for us to filter the information on internet and then trust it. That is to look into the author of the article or website.

For example, the aticle about information literacy in the website of http://www.libraryinstruction.com/infolit.html which I recommend to you was written by Barbara Humes. When I googled her, there is a link about this person at http://catalogue.nla.gov.au/Record/4151502. From there, I knew her book was collected and made into microform in Educational Resources Information Center at Washington DC.

I did another googling for the website author,Michael Lorenzen. Here is the link for him at http://library.cmich.edu/bibliographers/michaellorenzen/. The webpage told me that he is the head of reference services/bibliographer for Philosophy and Educational Administration in Central Michigan University.

From the above searching and finding, I believe Babara's article and Michael's website are reliable sources for my research beause both of them are professional in this field.

Trust nothing you read!!!

Trust nothing you read!!!

I do not think that it is possible.

When I open a page with a horoscope and read auspicious forecast for my future, trust me, I always trust this information. On the contrary, when my horoscope is negative, I never trust it.

Other people prefer to trust negative information. People call them pessimists. And that is people's nature. Everyone trusts this information which consonants with his/her inner life.

Expressing my opinion,I do not mean people who have to use in their works only reliable
information.

The related paragraph from the article

"4. Information Literacy

Another problem, we are faced with, is that of reliability: How do we know that what we read, saw or heard comes from a reliable source? How do we evaluate the information gleaned?
Yoram Eshet suggests a cognitive tool in order to cope with this problem: Information Literacy: Trust nobody
This literacy acts as a filter: It identifies false, irrelevant, or biased information, and avoids its penetration into the learnerĂs cognition.... without a good command of information literacy, how can one decide which, of the endless pieces of contradicting information found on the web, to believe? Which of the news on the web to trust? Which political opinion posted on the web to adopt? "
